Maintenance Guide for Your Walk-In Tub

Walk-In Tub Maintenance

Quality walk-in tubs will last you a lifetime. By performing essential, routine maintenance, you can ensure your walk-in tub stays safe and functional without hiccups. This maintenance guide will provide you with simple, step-by-step instructions on how to clean your walk-in tub.

Rinse After Bathing

After you use your walk-in tub, you may want to simply go about your day. However, a few minutes of cleaning after each bath will save you a great deal of scrubbing in the future.

Once your walk-in tub drains, take a minute to rinse it out with warm water. The handheld shower wand is perfect for this!

A quick rinse helps to remove any limescale and soap scum buildup before it sticks to the surface. In every Safe Step walk-in tub, a nonporous sanitary gel coating comes standard, making product care a breeze while preventing mold, mildew and bacteria.

Weekly Cleaning

You should clean your walk-in tub more thoroughly once a week. Rinsing after each bath will make this weekly cleaning much quicker. Use only a mild cleaner that is non-abrasive, ammonia-free and safe on acrylic (i.e., disinfecting wipes, window/glass cleaner, multipurpose bathroom cleaner, etc.).

We recommend wiping down the tub surfaces with a soft sponge or washcloth. Avoid wire brushes, steel wool or any other abrasives. While they may remove staining and build-up, they will also damage the tub’s surface. Be sure to wash and rinse all surfaces and fixtures to leave them looking shiny and sparkling new!

Clean the door seal weekly as well. For this, you can use rubbing alcohol.

Monthly Internal Cleaning

Walk-in tubs often include air or water jet systems to provide therapeutic massages while bathing. These require special system purging and cleaning once a month to remove soap residue, body oils and other build-up. Below are three simple steps for cleaning a walk-in tub with jets.

Step 1: Purge the Entire System

To start this deeper cleaning process, fill your walk-in tub with warm water until the top of the back jet is covered.

Step 2: Mix Bleach and Dishwashing Soap

Once your walk-in tub is filled with water, pour in one cup of bleach (not the “splashless” type) and a tablespoon of automatic dishwashing powder.

Turn on the system and run the air jets (or micro-bubbles) and the water jets for 15 minutes, then drain and rinse with the handheld shower wand. This disinfects the tubing inside the jets and removes dirt and grime so that you can get a truly clean and fresh bathing experience every time.

Step 3: Refill the Tub and Run the System

Lastly, refill your walk-in tub with only warm water. Turn on the jets and let them run an additional 15 minutes before turning off and rinsing with the shower wand again. Wipe down the surfaces with a soft cloth, and you’re done!
