Make Your Bathroom a Safe Space
About 37% of bathroom injuries occur in or around tubs and showers.1 Many of them are caused by slips and falls, especially for older adults while bathing. Reduce your risk with these tips to increase accessibility and stability in your bathroom.
Add a Raised Toilet With Grab Bars
A chair-height toilet makes it easier to sit down and stand up. Make sure your toilet is set at a comfortable height, ranging between 17 and 19 inches. For additional stability, add grab bars around the toilet.
Lower Your Sink Height
If you are in a wheelchair or use a seated vanity while brushing your teeth or shaving, your sink should be no more than 34 inches high to ensure easy access to the counter and sink from a seated position.
Create a Well-Lit Bathroom
Safely navigate your bathroom at night with a nightlight for better visibility. You can also upgrade to an illuminated light switch for an additional light source.
Remove Bath Rugs and Mats
Rugs and bath mats can be trip hazards. Consider removing them to prevent falls. Instead, add textured stickers for extra grip on slick floor surfaces like tile.
Add Accessible Shelving
Lowering your shelving ensures everything is within easy reach. This helps you avoid overexerting yourself and potentially losing your balance, reducing your risk of slips and falls.
